NSW: Think twice about pets as presents - RSPCA
People are being urged to think twice before giving a pet this Christmas after morethan 33,000 animals arrived at the New South Wales RSPCA in 12 months.
And those who already have pets are being urged to ensure they've made suitable arrangementsfor their animal if they're planning to take a holiday.
The RSPCA says more than 500 animals were surrendered or abandoned in the state overthe Christmas period last year.
It says people should ensure they're able to afford the time and money a pet demandsbefore taking on the responsibility.
It's estimated cats can cost about $2 a day to feed, $50 a year to vaccinate and about$6,000 in sundry vet expenses over their 10-year lifespan.
Dogs can live up to 20 years, eat their way through about $10 of food every day, andalso accumulate thousands of dollars in vet bills.
